turan@unhcr.orgDear Ms. Batchelor,
I am writing to express my deepest concern about the case of an Iranian refugee family in Turkey. Mr. Reza Motamedi (case number 385 - 09 C 00682), his wife and 19-month old daughter have been awaiting an answer from the UNHCR since fleeing Iran two years ago.
Mr. Motamedi is a documented Christian convert and has a well-founded fear of persecution if he is forced to return to Iran. The Islamic Republic persecutes religious minorities, and Iranian law permits the death penalty for apostasy.
Mr. Motamedi is only one of the thousands of Iranian refugees who are living in deplorable conditions in Turkey. They are not permitted to work and have little access to health care. There are documented cases of pressure and attacks on these refugees who have put trust in the UNHCR.
The UNHCR has thus far failed to provide these refugees with protection and basic needs. I urge you to uphold your obligations to Mr. Motamedi and his family by accepting their case for asylum so they can be legally resettled in a safe home.
Both the Iranian community outside of Iran and human rights activists around the globe have taken notice of the UNHCR’s mishandling of Iranian asylum cases. I urge you to live up to the international community’s expectations of the UNHCR as a champion for human rights. Mr. Motamedi left Iran trusting that he could place his and his children’s fate in your caring hands.
Kind Regards,
xxxxxxxxx
