I write to bring your attention to the horrific human rights situation in regards to the Iranian Refugees in Greece.
As I am sure you are aware, some of the refugees have been on a hunger strike for two weeks now. As a human rights activist, I do not wish to see anyone harming their body. However, this demonstrates the grave desperation of the refugees whose applications have been denied or remain unprocessed.
Certain refugees have been waiting for their cases to be processed by the UNHCR for years. In the interim, they are being treated very poorly by the pertinent authorities in Greece. In essence, they are living in an atrocious state of mental, and physical, suspension.
I urge you to take immediate action. You are responsible for the well-being of the refugees whose cases are under consideration in Greece. Please know that these Iranians fled their homes and families due to a legitimate fear of persecution by the government of Iran. It has become blatantly evident that the refugees would likely be subjected to both illegal and extremely cruel punishment if forced to return to Iran.
They have suffered enough. The time has long since passed for the United Nations to take action. I ask again that you please come to their assistance.
Yours,
Ulrike Beudgen
